Opus Bistro @ Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar

Monday, March 21, 2016

I'm not a huge fan of birthday parties or celebrations, as I prefer to spend quality time with my loved ones. Which is why WL & I went for dinner at Opus Bistro, tucked away at Jalan Bangkung, one of Bangsar's neighbourhood to celebrate my belated birthday.

We arrived early & the restaurant was still empty. We quickly ordered an appetizer, mains & a dessert before other customers started pouring in. Our appetizer, Classic Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken was served minutes later. We dug in with our forks & took the first bite, but was slightly disappointed that the dressing was not enough & the chicken rather dry. It surely wasn't a good start.

After a weak start, we were hoping that the upcoming dishes would tantalize our taste buds. The 1st main, Linguine Aglio Olio with Smoked Duck tasted decent but the puddle of olive oil sitting at the bottom of the plate was a definite turn-off. A few slurps leave an oily mouthfeel that made us felt repulsed by it. Yet, we still finished it because it's not exactly inedible.

The 2nd main is also another pasta dish - Angel Hair Pasta with Scallops. This pasta tasted okay but still lacked the special touch that might make us crave for more. Again, the puddle of olive oil was another turn-off. And did I mention the angel hair was a little overcooked?

WL & I haven't eaten risotto before & decided to give it a shot by ordering the Squid Ink Risotto as our 3rd main. Although this dish fared pretty well on taste, but the shrimp has a huge head with very few flesh to savour. Above all, it wasn't fresh & the calamari seemed to be too chewy, leaning towards rubbery. It's a pity that I had to cut brownie points for this dish.

Maybe the desserts won't do no wrong, I thought to myself. What better to judge other than the classic Tiramisu. It was served in a form of a glass & one spoonful told it all. Instead of the velvety texture of mascarpone, the Tiramisu was a little dry as if it was kept past its shelf life. Perhaps due to this, the coffee liquor taste seemed to have diminish as well.

Opus Bistro didn't provide a great dining experience for its price. It surely left much to be desired. Especially if dined on a special occasion such as birthday. Rating: 6.5 out of 10.
