Kingsman: The Secret Service

Saturday, March 14, 2015

When I saw the trailer of Kingsman: The Secret Service on TV, it gave me the impression of a really cool spy agent movie. It made me ACTUALLY wanting to watch it even though it's not a summer blockbuster release. Kingsman has been a long wait since the last spy thriller movie was shown in cinemas, as the silver screen was mostly dominated by superhero themes in the last 5 years.

To be honest, I'm starting to feel the superhero fatigue because not just Marvel but 2 studios, DC & Fox have jumped into the bandwagon of turning more comics plots to movie trilogies after Marvel's successful cinematic universe. With Kingsman, it was a breath of fresh air.

In summary, the film follows a young man named Gary "Eggsy" Unwin (Taron Egerton) who was recruited by a super-secret spy organization to train & become a spy agent. I loved the fact that the creators used an unknown actor as the lead because I was in for a surprise. Moreover, it made the transformation from an unrefined street guy to a highly skilled gentleman very convincing. Surely you can expect Matthew Vaughn who directed X-Men: First Class to make Kingsman a wonder.

I won't be revealing more of the plot because you've got to watch it. All I'm going to rave about is how incredibly stylish the movie was because spy agents were always dressed in bespoke suits. Vaughn collaborated with luxury retailer to create a range of bespoke suits while the accessories seen in the movie were designed by heritage brands. This collaboration marks the first film which customers can purchase all the outfits they see in the movie. Such brilliant marketing!

This movie is rated 18 in Malaysia & I'd say the censorship board meant it. It's not the kind of movie you'd want your child to watch. Kingsman is full of profanities & mild graphic violence, though I personally thought it was rather hilarious how the scenes were delivered. Go watch the movie & remember, strictly for adults only. =P

Accidental adventure at Zhongshan

Sunday, March 08, 2015

My first trip to Zhongshan, China was no less adventurous, at least better than what I envisioned earlier. Due to the long journey, my co-worker & I had to catch a flight a day before the workshop. Part of me dreaded the trip because the thought of seeing some of my less pleasant regional colleagues puts me off. The other half of me felt exhilarating about stepping foot on Hong Kong soil again after 18 years. How time flies...

Travelling to KLIA & boarding the plane was a breeze as there was no delay. I looked through the window & finally caught a glimpse of the A380 parked at a nearby skybridge. I just had to snap a photo of it to prove I was there saw it. Amazing, isn't it?

Our plane took off soon after, then arrived at the destination approximately 4 hours later. We were supposed to get on the ferry at the airport pier which will take us directly to Zhongshan. However, we weren't sure where to purchase the tickets & decided to ask for help from an airport staff. He directed us to pass through immigration & collect our luggage first then only proceed to the counter which sell the tickets. Boy, he was so wrong. The minute we left the terminal building, we were no longer allowed to re-enter the terminal building. To our dismay, the counters outside don't sell ferry tickets as it is only available within the terminal. Another way to get to the pier would be to take a bus downtown & walk approximately 15 mins in order to reach the pier.

We took a chance & opted to travel by road; bought coach tickets which will take us directly to our hotel, with our limited spoken Mandarin. The ticket lady rushed us over to an MPV & told us to get into the vehicle, together with other Chinese strangers. We were dumbfounded because we expected it to be a coach, or so we were told. Feeling desperate, we climbed into the MPV& the driver left the airport minutes later.

I couldn't stop myself from asking the driver where all of us are heading, just to be sure we weren't cheated & ended up getting lost. I panicked when the driver reluctantly replied that our journey stops at Shenzhen, not Zhongshan. So I gathered up courage to chat up with one of the Chinese lady sitting behind. Thankfully, she was kind enough to explain that the MPV will stop at Shenzhen bus terminal, whereby passengers will board different buses to go their separate ways. You wouldn't have imagine how relieved we were after hearing such comforting words with much assurance. God bless her!

The MPV journey took about 40 minutes to reach the Shenzhen border. Another 15-20 mins or so, we finally arrived at the bus terminal & we all parted ways from our fellow travellers. We made sure to board the right bus. This road trip took about 1 hour 30 mins & was no short of "interesting" views. While my colleague dozed off next to me, I stared out to the window & basked in horizon that whizzed by. Not that it was very scenic - the sky looked dreary with no sun & full of haze! At one point, I was freaking out silently when our bus was crossing a bridge built over a wide river at high altitude. If it wasn't the mist blurring the view, I could've peed in my pants. Imagine the bus crashing down the river from few hundred feet above...

The coach finally arrived at the 2nd last stop of another hotel before our destination. Other passengers alighted the coach & left the 2 of us. I mean, why would we leave when driver should be dropping us at the last stop. Again, we were cheated because the driver shooed us out, rudely telling Sheraton Zhongshan ain't the last stop. Flabbergasted, we wheeled our luggage to the hotel lobby & asked for help from the concierge. Sheraton is only a stone's throw & only takes less than 5 mins walk. What?! Walking in this chilly winter?! Okay, we still did since the hotel staff refused to call a taxi for us. At least she was right about the Sheraton being nearby because it is merely 2 blocks from where we came.

On a separate note, we were glad that we missed the ferry because taking the coach allowed us to arrive at Sheraton 3 hours earlier than expected. Why? We didn't have to wait for the ferry's scheduled timing which would require waiting time of 2 hours. Phew! The 2-day workshop was less eventful so I won't be elaborating on that.

On my last evening at Zhongshan, we went for some sight-seeing at downtown shopping malls. So far, the few shopping malls we went were not posh, more like neighbourhood mall equivalent in Malaysia. But oh boy, their stuff carries a hefty price tag. I don't mean luxury brands; they're brands like Levi's, Adidas & Nike. You get what I mean. Their food is not exactly cheap unless you know where to find them. Nevertheless, my first time strolling out in the street near end winter seems pretty fun. All wet & gloomy, but won't break a sweat.

Our China colleagues recommended a restaurant which serves popular seafood steamboat cum porridge. We found our way there & it was a less hygiene premise. But then again, why feel surprised when those good food haunts around Malaysia are not any better? Now here's the interesting bit, we need to pick our preferred raw seafood & veggies by weight, then the waiter will bring it to the table. Meanwhile, the waiter will pour uncooked rice with pork ribs into the wok to be steamed.

We put fish over the steamer & let it cooked based on pre-set timing by the restaurant. Once ready, we ate it & put the next seafood on the steamer without removing the still-cooking rice at the bottom. The steps are to be repeated until all the seafood or veggies you ordered are fully consumed. This cooking style is to allow the natural juices from sea produce & veggies to drip to the bottom & season the porridge well.

Trust me, we didn't need any sauce or salt to add on. As soon as the seafood & veggies were gone, we lifted the steamer & voila, the rice had became well-cooked porridge ready for a feast. One spoonful sent chills down the spine; just so exhilarating. It tasted so damn good. All the natural goodness in one big wok.

You have to go in a big group in order to enjoy this fantastic meal. Honestly, I'm not too fond of most Chinese food in this part of China but I'd have to admit this is by far the best Zhongshan dish I've ever tasted. If I'm ever returning, this restaurant is definitely the top of my must-visit places.

I thought the entire 4D3N trip will turn out to be exhausting & dull. No doubt there were less pleasant moments but I prefer to not mention here. At least, my colleague & I won a Xiaomi power bank from a group work. Not to forget the misadventures adding a slice of fun to the trip that I initially dreaded. Now let's see if the upcoming trip in June will be as exciting.

Fuzio Bar & Ristorante, Jalan Berangan

Saturday, February 14, 2015

WL & I craved for a fantastic dinner for Valentine's Day but no wanting burn a hole in the pocket. All thanks to Groupon, he bought a voucher to dine at Fuzio Bar & Ristorante at Jalan Berangan, KL. It wasn't all that pretty driving to KL especially on a rainy Friday evening because we didn't want to get caught with a busy crowd on the actual day.

The restaurant was peaceful when we arrive even though there were a few tables occupied. Me likey! As soon as we took our seats, the waitress served us focaccia & started taking our orders. A romantic dinner ain't complete without a glass of wine. So, we ordered white wine because it is less strong for a lousy drinker like me. We were really hungry & quickly asked for our soup to be served quickly.

The soup was rich in flavour & came with good amount of seafood. This delicious soup kickstarted our appetite for the night.

Our first main is linguine seafood cooked in white wine sauce. Indeed using white wine in cooking really helps to elevate the flavour, brings balance & the right amount of acidity to any dish. Particularly in this pasta dish, the white wine blocked away the "fishy" odour or taste that we would expect from sea produce. No doubt the seafood was fresh but the hint of alcohol brought about an enjoyable eating experience.

WL was raving about the chicken skewer he had at the restaurant previously & ordered for me to try. I was pleasantly surprised how juicy & tender the chicken was even after being cooked on a hot grill. It's officially my favourite dish of this restaurant.

The next main is a funghi pizza - a combination of tomato sauce, mozzarella, button mushroom & oregano. I always have a thing for Italian pizza & this dish was spot on. Crust was thin & crispy, button mushroom was succulent. A simple pizza, yet delectable.

It wasn't WL's first time dining at Fuzio & so he insisted that I should try the more expensive dish. I let him decide our last dish. Surely he has impeccable taste, for he asked for baked cod fish. One bite & all I could blurt out was the word, WOW. This masterpiece was a concoction of flavours created with teriyaki sauce, chickpea & young papaya salad. Even more surprising was the mashed chickpea being more addictive than the fish itself. Simply brilliant!

I would definitely visit Fuzio again in the future. For a normal dine-in, it is an expensive affair. For special occasions, I would highly recommend this restaurant for it's worth every dollar spent on pampering your tummy. Rating 4.7 out of 5. Just beware of jockeys who help park your cars. They stole coins from WL's car.

One year feels like eternity

Monday, February 09, 2015

Wow, I just realised that my 1 year work anniversary came about on Saturday. Working in my position felt like it's been forever. Monotonous, last minute, nonsensical, idiocy, restrained, lack of boldness, confusion...STUCK. These were the concoction of feelings that haunted me since last year until now.

It's no wonder that getting up from bed & dragging my feet to work is becoming more daunting lately. I felt demotivated as soon as I stepped into my cubicle. If only I could refused to dwell in this environment so full of stupidity that makes me dumber each day. I do not expect to downgrade myself again. Not now, not ever.

I wish I could just tender my resignation immediately. Right here, right now. And go on pursuing my dream. But the current wage pays the bills & I'm in need of a solid capital for startup. I'll be patient & start my preparation secretly. When the right time has come, I'll leave in style. Meanwhile, keep showering the good prayers for a decently smooth year ahead. Also, can someone enlighten me how to deal with the idiots plagued with an island syndrome?

Franco, 1 Utama

Sunday, February 08, 2015

Some time ago, there was a restaurant called Miam Miam at 1 Utama which serves mainly western cuisine. For whatever reason it may be, it was re-branded to Franco recently. A French-Japanese fine casual-dining restaurant. Sounds fancy, isn't it?

WL & I finally stepped foot into the restaurant to give it a try after passing by the entrance several times. We weren't very hungry so we kept away from being greedy & only settled for 2 pasta mains & 2 drinks.

First off, we had one of Franco's signature dish - the pork ham with olive oil pasta. Since Franco fuses both French & Japanese style, it's not surprising to see a poached egg then drizzled with roasted sesame. Though the portion was quite small for a price of RM20+, we were quite fond of the taste & texture.

The next dish is squid ink pasta but we were disappointed by the poor food presentation. Knowingly the pasta was blackened with squid ink, it seemed to me the chef made little effort to add some contrast to the already dull-looking dish. Not that the few miserable slices of cherry tomatoes helped. True enough, visual doesn't lie. This pasta didn't fare too well on our taste buds. It smelled & tasted too fishy at first bite, as if the squid wasn't quite fresh.

The drinks we ordered were pretty good. I opted for hot green tea while WL chose a funky drink as usual - a fruity concoction. My green tea may be ordinary but I liked that it tasted real, not at all diluted nor artificial. WL's fruity concoction (I couldn't recall the exact name) was one-of-a-kind which tickled my fancy too.

My only complaint was the small portion they served for an average price of RM20+ & above. And I supposed not all of their dishes are as delicious. You just need to pick the right one & usually the chef's recommendation would be the safest. Do note that their waiting staffs are not really friendly bunch & I had a glimpse of one of them sulking when our food took too long to arrive. Not too sure if other outlets have similar predicament. Rating 3.8 out of 5.

WL's Birthday @ Cava, Jalan Bangkung

Saturday, January 24, 2015

For WL's birthday this year, I decided to spice things up a little bit by trying out a different delicacy instead of the usual Italian dinner. It was Spanish food for dinner. And we picked Cava located at Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar to celebrate WL's birthday.

As soon as we arrived, we quickly placed our orders before more customers were seen walking into the restaurant. To get the dinner started, the waiter served 2 slices of baquette slathered with crab bits & mayonnaise. It was so appetizing that it made me hungrier for the rest of the dishes.

WL couldn't miss the chance to order beer as a celebratory drink & called for Konig Ludwig Weissbier. Although I ain't really a beer drinker, I took a swig of the beer. Very smooth & with a hint of fruity flavour.

We oredered 2 tapas - sauteed mushroom in olive oil with roasted walnut & marinated pork meat balls. The sauteed mushroom was cooked soft with olive oil & a dash of chilli flakes while the roasted walnut was fragrant & added some crunch, giving a balanced texture & mouthfeel.

The marinated pork was on a sweeter tone, using tomato paste as a base. Whilst it wasn't WL's favourite, I found it rather unique with a combination of sweet & salty taste. At least, the dish didn't taste too predictable, which I found fascinating.

One is not considered having tasted true Spanish food if one didn't include paella in the order. We wanted to make sure we'll be savouring the best, hence we laid eyes on the chef's recommended squid ink paella with shrimp & garlic cream sauce. Indeed the dish didn't disappoint. Add a dollop of cream & every bite became more flavourful than ever. The portion may look small but you'll be surprised that we couldn't finish it.

Overall, it was an enjoyable treat worthy of a thumbs up. Price averages around RM20+ & above which is slightly expensive. But a once-in-a-blue-moon indulgence doesn't really burn a hole in your pocket, does it? A rating of 4 out of 5, without doubt.

Tenmaya, Nexus Bangsar South

Friday, January 02, 2015

My sis couldn't stop raving about this new Japanese restaurant, Tenmaya which opened its doors recently at Nexus Bangsar South. WL & I decided to give it a try on New Year's Eve dinner. Surprisingly, the premise is rather small & houses barely 20 tables. I love the fact the restaurant ain't too crowded, a perfect setting for the both of us to enjoy our meals in peace.

We were careful to not order too much as I was told the food portion is rather huge. Indeed, I wasn't fooled at all when the waiter served our soft-shell crab salad, which is a staple in Japanese restaurants. And oh boy, the salad is fantastically good with lots of crab meat.

Next on our order list is a salmon temaki, arranged neatly in 4 rolls. Another sumptuous treat with every bite. Just so good...

WL couldn't live without ordering his all-time favourite, tori katsudon. The portion is huge & so worth it for the price of around RM20+. And it tasted lovely too.

I, on the other hand, wanted to try something more unique. I called for a mushroom dish with truffle oil & it definitely didn't disappoint. It has all the different types of mushrooms - shimeji, bunapi & so on.

It was a very, very fulfilling dinner because both of us were so stuffed, we could barely stand up & make for the exit. I strongly recommend this restaurant for a satisfying Japanese food experience. Rating of 4 out of 5.

Welcoming 2015 with open arms

Thursday, January 01, 2015

Happy 2015! It's the dawn of a new year again & it's time to reflect what 2014 had meant to me. I found a job early this year & although it may not be the ideal job environment (again), I'm proud to say that I resisted the urge to move on too soon. It's probably because I had more pressing issues to focus on - my skin problem.
Never in my life I would've ended up as a sufferer of acne problems. I documented about the my journey not too long ago & felt glad that my persistence paid off. Having acne is not exactly life threatening but it was indeed a life changing experience. Seeing myself almost falling into a reclusive state because I was too embarrassed about how I looked & how others would see me; really left a deep scar on my self-esteem.

Thankfully, I got involved in other passion to keep me busy & alive. That's none other than signing up for a short patisserie course. During intensive 3-months course, I felt exhausted but very much happy & alive. I never knew baking can be so therapeutic. Surprisingly, I discovered more about myself that I never knew existed - my full commitment to pursue & achieve my dreams. With this task crossed out off my resolution list, I'm one step closer to building my dream business.

I'm definitely a much happier person in 2014 & I intend to keep it that way in 2015. Now that WL seems to be committed to lose weight, I can safely announce that my 2014 resolution is quite complete. Maybe there's no need to prepare a resolution list in this new year. I'll tell myself to stay true to my chosen path & strive for it. For a hundred-foot journey starts with a single step I made last year.

May 2015 be a kinder year for me & all of you out there. Happy New Year!

Coffee Ink, Bandar Botanic

Monday, December 29, 2014

Lots of artisanal cafes are mostly found in KL & PJ but Klang is catching up fast with a several cafes mushrooming around Bandar Botanic. WL went to Coffee Ink with his friend & thought of it as a cool hangout place for us after I moved in with him in the near future.

We ordered for a slice of mille crepe while waiting for our coffees to be brewed. The layers were not as thin as I hoped for but the pastry cream is made up for it with just the right level of sweetness. The staff squirted some caramel sauce over the cake probably for aesthetics reasons but definitely spoilt the entire taste. Way too sweet!

Our coffees came soon after - latte for WL, mocha for me. My cuppa was a little too sweet (I'm not exactly a sweet tooth) but I'd must say their coffee art is pretty impressive. The barista made my cuppa a puppy face. WL isn't really coffee drinker so he couldn't tell whether his latte is good for him.

One of the more interesting snacks in Coffee Ink is the bacon roll which consist of bacon slices wrapped in popiah sheets then deep-fried to golden brown. The natural juice from the bacon oozing out of the rolls screams heavenly & cholesterol at the same time. Haha. It was pretty good but I would only indulge this once in a blue moon. I'm so not approving this snack for WL.

I'm scoring 3.8 out of 5 for Coffee Ink for their coffee art variety & the awesome, fatty bacon rolls. A nice hangout place with great taste for music.

Another missing plane before the year end: Air Asia QZ8501

Sunday, December 28, 2014

I read with eyes wide in horror that our nation is stricken with yet another airline tragedy. Air Asia QZ 8501 enroute from Surabaya to Singapore was reportedly missing from radar at 7.24am (GMT+8). It was scheduled to arrive Changi Airport at 8.30am (GMT+8).

Speculations ran rife that the aircraft may have crashed nearby Belitung Island, as some fishermen claimed to have heard a loud explosion. The flight with 162 people on board comprised Indonesians, a British, Singaporean & Malaysian.

Although the survival chance is bleak, I'm praying hard that the wreckage can be found immediately so that the cause of the incident can be resolved.

The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies

Saturday, December 27, 2014

Will you follow me, #OneLastTime?
Those were the words that resonate throughout the trailer for the final instalment & probably the last Middle-Earth movie, The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies.

I had many mixed feelings after watching the trailer. First, I was excited because there'll be an epic movie to look forward to during Christmas. Second, I felt a slight tinge of sadness that this movie will probably be the last movie related to Middle Earth by Peter Jackson. Lastly, but not surprising, I was apprehensive about how good this movie will be. After all, The Battle of The Five Armies is only a couple of pages long chapter in the book. One wonders how on earth the plot would stretch up to more than 2 hours.

But Peter Jackson did it again & I must applaud him for his effort. True as my instincts tell me, I was deflated by how this defining chapter ended. The film was a little empty & somehow detracted from the main focus - the hobbit. Poor Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) had minimal onscreen time which is almost forgettable.

Jackson decided to put the battle scenes as the forefront of the plot which befits the movie title but not exactly the most compelling storytelling. Take off the battle scenes & there's nothing much to talk about for a 2-hour movie. So the rest of film mostly consist of filler plot which is non-existent in the book. I welcome the additional scenes with the casts from previous movies to establish the connection leading up to the Lord of The Rings. Good for those who didn't watch the past trilogy.

Most tacky scene I came across is Galadriel carrying the wounded Gandalf while Elrond & Saruman fought with the Nazgul. It looked so fake as if Gandalf is tied to an invisible rope & being hoisted mid-air while Galadriel pretends to carry him. Weird...

Visual effects are stunning without doubt but the battle scenes can be quite a bore after watching it for about 40 minutes. At least the pivotal scene when Thorin died from serious injury was worth the wait. Richard Armitage's brilliant acting made me tear up & wished that the story didn't have to turn out this way.

My only complaint is that there was not much thought put behind about adding in a scene of Thorin's funeral. I know it's not in the book at all but Thorin deserved to be honoured for fighting gallantly to his last breath. The farewell scenes between Bilbo & the remaining surviving dwarves was touching but seemed something amiss & rushed too.

Anyhow, the film is still an entertaining piece & I'm truly grateful to be part of this 14 year journey. This last chapter ties all the loose ends of one of the best literary work ever written. Although Tolkien fans may detest the film's lack of loyalty to the book but I personally felt it serves the movie-going audience well who may not fancy digging the books. If only Warner Bros wasn't too money minded from the beginning & allowed Jackson to keep The Hobbit to 2 movies only.

GO Noodle House, The School Jaya One

Friday, December 26, 2014

I hardly spoke about before but my company has an unusual perk for its staffs - free lunches on Fridays. It was Boxing Day & the bosses decided to try out something different from the Chinese stir-fry restaurants. And so we headed to GO Noodle House at The School Jaya One because it's the nearest to our office.

As a matter of fact, it wasn't my first time dining at this restaurant & the last I tried was the pork ball noodle which they're famous for. This time, I made up my mind to order another dish in hopes that it's as tasty as its popular noodles. I picked dry pan mee while most of my colleagues opted the pork ball noodles.

Luckily, my pan mee arrived first & I couldn't wait to dig in with my chopsticks & spoon.

Okay...so the noodles was supposed to be pan mee, the chewy & springy texture that we all know too well. But this version of the noodles tasted more like a springy wantan noodle with dark sauce. No hint of pan mee texture at all. Moreover, the noodles & sauce were incredibly salty.

The soup was so salty & laden with MSG that I can't imagine scooping it onto the noodles. Adding on anchovies & minced meat as toppings could turn the entire dish into disaster. Oh my...I should've stuck to the regular pork ball noodles instead of trying to be experimental.

Overall, I'm giving a score of 3.5 out of 5. It wasn't because this pan mee spoilt my overall experience. The pork ball noodles I ate the last round was okay but not fantastic. Nevertheless, GO Noodle House is still a decent place for lunch, considering the premise can be quite crowded during noon.

Christmas Dinner @ Verona Trattoria, Section 17 PJ

Thursday, December 25, 2014

The last time I went to Verona Trattoria, Section 17 was on WL's birthday. It became one of my favourite haunts for good pasta besides WIP at Bangsar Shopping Centre.

We have decided to celebrate Christmas at this restaurant, since going downtown KL or most Bangsar spots will be fully booked. It's a known fact that specially curated Christmas menu is priced dearly, we opted for dishes from the standard menu. To start off the night, the waiter served mushroom soup with truffle oil.

Oh, so appetizing!

The soup is not too thick; just the right consistency I like that doesn't fill my stomach too quickly. The dash of truffle oil really brought out the flavour of the soup. The next dish seafood marinara which consist of mussels, shrimps, squid & fish coupled with spaghetti. One of my favourites in my must-have pasta dish. Spaghetti was cooked al dente. Yums!

As usual,WL didn't want to miss out pork from the list. He called for a platter of roasted pork with salad. A scrumptious one, indeed.

We left a little bit of space for our tummy to indulge in the chef's recommended, tiramisu. One spoonful of the dessert made all the difference. Love the Bailey's & rum soaked sponge fingers paired with silky, smooth mascarpone.

I would truly recommend this place to anyone who loves a warm, cozy Italian ambient. Some might find the interior a little old & simple but I believe it exudes a more authentic & rustic Italian charm. Food averages around RM11 - RM20 or slightly higher depending on your orders. I wouldn't hesitate at all if being invited to dine at this neighbourhood restaurant. Rating: 4.8 out of 5

The Morning After, Jaya One

Sunday, December 21, 2014

I took a day off on Friday just to get some rest & clear off my mind from all the mess happening in the office. Being a filial granddaughter, I took Grandma out for lunch instead of the usual hawker food takeout at the nearby coffee shop. We headed to The Morning After which is situated at Jaya One, right opposite of The School.

The price is generally affordable, averaging around RM12 per dish. I ordered mocha & shrimp aglio olio because they couldn't prepare eggs benedict as their turkey ham ran out of stock.

The hot mocha didn't look too impressive when the waiter placed the cup on the table. The coffee art was definitely not impressive. Upon taking a sip, I was further disappointed by the mild coffee taste. My drink kind of tasted like diluted dark chocolate drink instead.

For starters, I called for wild mushroom soup with a splash of truffle oil. Not thick enough but then again, it's not cream of mushroom so I guess it's okay. The truffle oil provided an appetizing start & compensated the lack of thick consistency of the soup.

My shrimp aglio olio came soaking wet in olive oil. Although the taste seemed okay, I didn't enjoy the experience of putting strands of spaghetti drenched in grease into my mouth. It's gross! I'm miffed that many restaurants take pasta cooking for granted just because it's supposedly the easiest dish to cook.

I picked grilled chicken & mashed potatoes for Grandma because the rest of the dishes didn't suit her rather picky taste. It turned out pretty okay, I guess. The one complain I had to agree with Grandma was that the plate kept on spinning each time she sliced a piece of the chicken. Not an enjoyable experience.

I called for the bill after gulping the last bit of my coffee. When the bill came, I didn't bother to check on the details & just slip the credit card to the waitress. She came back with the transaction slip for me to sign; it was then I realised they undercharge our meals. I could've been nasty but I decided against it. I kindly told the waitress that my entree was pasta & the drink wasn't latte (eggs benedict & latte cheaper were obviously cheaper).

They tried cancelling the transaction but to no avail as the credit card company already approved the transaction. Then, another staff came to me to apologise for their mistake & the actual bill was only RM8 difference. He waived the RM8 so we didn't have to pay extra. Although I wasn't satisfied with their food, I was very pleased with how the staff handled this matter. I'm certainly eager to return for a 2nd visit, even if it's just for a drink.

Xiao Bar Wang, 1 Utama | Quartet, TTDI

Thursday, December 11, 2014

It was public holiday today, a perfect day for WL & I to shop for Christmas presents in conjunction with our upcoming gifts exchange party with our ex-colleagues. 1 Utama was packed with mostly window shoppers, a typical crowd during a public off-day. Moreover, it was the peak of the school holiday season as even exam candidates were done with their papers.

Xiao Bar Wang, 1 Utama
Literally all the restaurants were crowded & we had no idea on what to have for lunch. And so we settled for something really simple - Xiao Bar Wang which serves self-claimed authentic Taiwanese street snacks. Self-claimed? Yes, you read it right. Most of the time, I never believed in the word "authentic" when the restaurant is operated by foreign labour. Also, how often does franchise in Malaysia remain consistent in their food quality after 6 months?

Anyways, the price ain't too steep, averaging about RM15 if you order the set which includes a complimentary drink. I ordered the standard braised pork rice because it's the staple Taiwanese dish & shouldn't go wrong.

It tasted okay & normal - not particularly tasty but not inedible either. Good enough to satisfy meagre eater like me. However, the amount of rice stuffed into the cardboard tray is too much that it was difficult to scoop out without littering the table with bits of minced pork. But then again, this is a Taiwanese street snack restaurant. I shouldn't be complaining.

WL's order came in a nicely compartmentalized tray ala bento style. It's pork chop rice set, his favourite. Or should I say, any pork chop is his favourite.

WL obviously enjoyed his lunch set judging by the clean, empty tray left. Well, for me, I left a small portion of the rice because I was quite stuffed & I didn't want to consume too much carbs. I've been gaining weight lately due to daily carb diet & the lack of exercise for 1 year. In summary, the food is edible if you want a quick bite & too lazy to think about your meal. Otherwise, there are better choice elsewhere. Rating: 3 out of 5

Quartet, TTDI
After shopping, WL had a date with his ex-college buddies for a drink. By stroke of coincidence, we ended up at Quartet, TTDI because the other cafe we planned to go was closed. I opted for my usual hot mocha & stayed away from desserts or pastry as I could feel the lunch in my gut.

Mocha was okay but on a slightly sweet tone. In fact, my tongue tasted more of the cocoa powder instead of the coffee which I found common in most of the cafes I have visited so far. The cocoa powder was bittersweet, not the bitter type I normally use in baking.

WL picked a slice of cake from the display chiller to try. I couldn't recall which cake it was but upon the first bite, the sweetness enveloped my mouth followed by a hint of the weirdest taste I was simply clueless about its ingredient. Not too good, in my opinion.

The interior is a cosy one with rustic, earthy hues as the main theme. However, coffee & cake wasn't my cup of tea (pun intended). Perhaps the brunch & salad are better. Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Nyonya Kitchen, Klang

Sunday, December 07, 2014

WL had a sudden craving for nyonya food last night & decided to take me to one restaurant he discovered recently, not too far from his crib. Namely Nyonya Kitchen, the restaurant showcases a humble interior which resembles more of a clean, modern mamak store.

We ordered the usual nyonya staples - kapitan chicken, egg omelette, kangkung belacan & a bowl of salted vegetable soup.

This version of the egg omelette surprisingly did not have cincaluk, which is a standard condiment in a typical nyonya dish. It tasted alright but just lacked the authentic taste that I was expecting. The chicken, kangkung & soup were not too bad either. In fact, almost anything tastes good when you're hungry.

My only reservation is that the food had more Malay touch than its intended nyonya style. I craved for authenticity but this restaurant didn't exactly hit the jackpot. Nevertheless, it was a hearty meal & probably a good place for a nyonya fix if you're residing in Klang. Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
