7 days with Galaxy SIII

My good 'ol iPhone decided to die on me & I was left with no access to "civilisation". Umm, not literally. But you know the withdrawal symptoms that surrounds you when you're away with your smartphone for far too long. Yeah, you get the idea. I do have a spare phone, a Nokia 6100 that uses a standard size SIM card which my micro SIM stands no chance in fitting snugly into the compartment.

Whilst my phone was sent to the shop for repair, my cousin bro's gf was kind enough to lend me her brand new Samsung Galaxy SIII for a week. Yes, you read it right! A week~ I was cautious enough from leaving any smudge on the gorgeous large screen because the phone was barely...2 weeks old?

How did it felt being an Android user for a week? It's a breath of fresh air, if you ask me. A huge change from the rather rigid iOS that it does get a little dull after 2 years of usage. Not if you had your iPhone jailbreaked. Anyways, the functionality & flexibility on the Android or specifically the Galaxy SIII is vast that it does take quite a bit of time getting used to. The screen is pretty sensitive & half the time my fingers accidentally brushed on the soft keys, unwillingly activating some menu or functions. It does get pretty annoying after several days.

The huge 4.8" screen is gorgeous & my iPhone looks inferior next to it. The Koreans have outdid themselves by designing a phone with beautiful lines incorporating a large screen without compromising the thickness. I was really tempted to get the SIII myself but didn't because that would cost me RM2,199 at retail. Besides, the repair fees for my iPhone was only RM300 so I chose to be more prudent instead.

When it was time to return the SIII to its rightful owner, I couldn't bear to part with this baby. Can you imagine that? It did grew on me pretty quickly. Since I won't be able to hold it anymore, I took a picture of it & sharing it here. SIII, you have served me well. One day when my humble iPhone reaches its final journey, you'll know what phone I'll be looking for.

Augmented Reality (AR)

I was flipping through the newspapers for competitor's advertisements as part of my daily task in the office until I came across this Samsung Galaxy mobile phones Christmas ad. It wasn't their first insertion to promote their Galaxy series in white but this ad was their first to allow readers to view the Galaxy phones in 3D using augmented reality (AR).

All you need to do is download the Samsung GALAXY 3D app from Android Market. Next, launch the app & point the phone's camera to focus on the AR marker. Ta-daa! You'll see the 3D phone appear on the screen - rotatable & scalable. Move your camera phone slightly further but keeping the 3 markers within the frame allows 3 phones to pop up magically!

Using AR in thise case is a breath of fresh air from the usual, boring product ads which shout "Come buy me cuz I'm darn good". However, I thought the execution method was kind of a failure cuz you need to download the app from Android Market. For those who has an existing Android phone (excluding the Galaxy phones advertised), then it would entice them to view the AR. What about those who doesn't own Android? How is it possible to call for action from these readers to downlaoad the in order to view the 3D phone & consider visiting the shop, hence even purchasing the phone?

Perhaps using a microsite to view the AR instead of the app will be a more viable option?

I Am Nikon Fangirl

After months of consideration & pondering, I've finally made a stand to fulfil my wish. Here I am...announcing that I'm a proud owner of a Nikon DSLR! And officially declare myself as a Nikon fangirl from now on.

WL, the sweetest baby accompanied me to buy the camera of my choice at Amcorp Mall. I was so esctatic & couldn't believe myself carrying this woven bag home. Uber cool! XD

The standard purchase came with a free 8GB SD card & a humongous Nikon DSLR bag. Not too fancy, eh? -.-"

I negotiated with the boss to get a Hoya HMC UV filter & he agreed to package it together & offered a great deal. The price was at RM2,370 but due to credit card payment, customers will be imposed a 2% charges. In total, I paid RM2,417 which I felt is pretty affordable.

So it's time to snap all the way~ Can't wait to attend one of their workshops. =D

New year, new resolution and...new toy?!

The new year came & passed by so quickly. Have you all set your new year resolutions? For the first time in my life, I actually thought carefully & listed out my new year resolutions. Not much, only 3 as I'm trying to avoid being too ambitious. Being realistic means at least giving me some form of assurance that my goals are achievable. That way, it makes this year a more meaningful one. =)

My 2011 resolution would be:

1. Get a new job.
2. Save more money.
3. Tidy up my junk.

Out of the 3, I have successfully achieved the first resolution for the year. Yippee! I've found a new job but I shall be keeping mum for now until everything's firmed up. =P Moving on the 2nd resolution, saving money is indeed a long term effort. I think I did ok in this aspect though there is definitely room for improvement. What's more, I think I have failed miserably. Why? Cuz I just splashed almost 3k for a brand new toy. XD I supposed the pics speak for itself.

Still not getting the idea? Then this should work.

That's riighhhttt!! I'm now the proud owner of an iPhone 4, powered by DiGi.

It wasn't a rash decision as I've been thinking of getting one but not so soon. I was using the Nokia Xpress 5800 previously owned by WL. Initially, I quite liked the phone for its good audio. Somehow the phone started to irritate me a lot cuz the OS hangs easily & its Wifi doesn't switch of even after we have manually did so. Its MSN was a nuisance cuz it doesn't receive new IMs by itself unless refreshed manually. What's more, the earpiece started going wonky as there were so many incidents when I had to receive urgent calls & I just couldn't hear the person on the other line. How frustrating!

Come New Year's Eve, me & WL were hanging out with our colleague when we came across the DiGi roadshow at the Golden Oval, 1U. I was tempted but contemplated much cuz I was supposed to only purchase it probably after CNY. And so I've decided to sign up the MNP, waited 24 hours for my network to switch from Maxis to DiGi before I went back to the roadshow to collect my phone. Thank God for the amazingly fast service. I would've died if the network is not ready & I couldn't collect it from 1U on the last day of the roadshow. Where on earth am I gonna collect my iPhone if I missed it & had to arrange a collection with the dude who services me but his office based in Kajang??

When it was my turn to collect, I was unfortunate to encounter some issues with credit card limits. It was sorted out quickly & yes, the phone is finally in my hands. Seeing the packaging somehow makes me feel both exhilarating & amazed at how slim & sleek it can be in order to store the phone.

Inside the box, there is a simplified version of the operation manual. For the complete version, you will need to download them from the net. What a smart way to save cost.

Due to the slim body & intricacies of the phone, a micro SIM is required to power the network. In order to insert/remove the SIM, a metal pin is provided to aid the process.

Every iPhone set comes with a USB cable cum charger & a handsfree earphones. Can't imagine such a compact box could fit so many items.

There you have it, a simple review about what's inside an iPhone 4 box. I'm still in the midst of getting used to typing text messages on its Qwerty keyboard & downloading the essential apps. Oh boy, I was supposed to be talking about resolutions. How far I've strayed away from the original topic. Let's get back on track. Speaking of resolutions, my 3rd resolution is to tidy up. That's err...a long-term commitment. Especially when it requires full cooperation from my roommate aka my little sis. Much of the stuff piling up high - important or trash - are basically hers. *sighs* Let's hope she'll do something about that.

As you can see, my progress in achieving my resolutions are not going too well. Haha! XD At least I've found a new job that pays higher, which eventually leads to higher chances of saving money (hopefully =P). Things should be better when I start my new job after CNY. =)

Depth & realism like never before

The teaser ad came as an attention grabber with only a pair eyes staring out viciously on a FP+FC page on dailies of various languages. Instantaneously, my Dad thought it was some car advertisement trying to create attention of an upcoming big bang launch.

Two days later on 2 Sep, the same pair of eyes appeared again. This time on another newspaper but with something extra - a pair of 3D glasses. If you look carefully, the ad was printed in double image which was supposed to mimic the 3D effect once you put on the glasses provided.

This ad did not just end here. It had a centre spread page revealing the brand new Panasonic 3D Full HD Plasma TV. Use the 3D glasses & you should be able to see the 3D image of the puma jumping out of the TV screen.

Flip to the back page & you'll see the same pair of puma eyes staring viciously - this time with a night safari background. This visual is in 3D too!

Too bad the 3D image wasn't visually stunning cuz this is probably the best newspaper printing can achieve with the ordinary 3D glasses. At least Panasonic had succeeded in communicating the main theme - 3D to the readers. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time such an interesting concept is introduced in Malaysia. It sure is one hell of an expensive ad launch. No wonder they have this exclusively for The Sun. The Star would probably cost a bomb. =P

Arrival of my new baby

The long wait is finally over. After almost 3 weeks to a month of not having one, I sighed with relief that I no longer need to go through an excruciatingly painful torture wait another few donkey years for it; feeling deprived. =P

The thing that has kept me excited for the past few days is nothing other than my brand new lappie!

Dell Studio 1450!

I just don't know how to express how delighted I am to be able to afford a lappie for myself. If it wasn't due to my old Compaq in the brink of death, I wouldn't have bothered getting a new one. So it was out of desperate measures that I've decided to place order on Dell's website. And thankfully, my patience paid off as I obtained a pretty good deal over the PC Fair weekend - minus the queues & hassles.

With the bright LED screen measuring at 14" & weighing only 2.4kg, my baby is has everything that I needed or perhaps a little bit more. It is running on the Windows 7 platform & has been showing good signs of stability after 3 weeks of usage.

I supposed the only thing that made me the happiest that I purchased my baby at a really attractve price. Not too pricey, not too cheap that the performance is compromised - at least I'm satisfied. And *tsk tsk*...I no longer need to fight with my sis for the computer. =)

IT'S FINALLY HERE!

After what seems like an eternity, we don't have to wait no longer. Why? Cuz...

...PlayStation 3 has reached Malaysian shores.

Sony Malaysia decided to launch the gaming console by introducing the 80GB version in the market priced at RM1,599 (console only) or the Soul Calibre IV bundled package which is priced at RM1,799. And no, neither I nor my cousin bro bought the unit cuz it was still pricey to us. I went to 1 Utama where the official launch was held as I was curious what Sony Malaysia has planned for to hype up the event.

We were pretty late for the event, sad to say. Reason being cousin bro was out almost the whole day & I didn't have a car to drive there myself. By the time we're there, almost half of the activities were over. The most interesting agenda of the day was most probably the first-come-first-serve cash voucher for the PS3 purchase. Perhaps you're not aware that there were ppl spending the night at the event venue several days before the actual day. Ain't that madness?? o_O

The stage & booth set-up wasn't too bad. I would say it was pretty happening in a way cuz it was at the Highstreet Outdoor area. There is no way that you'll miss the event as every vehicle that passes by the New Wing would definitely see it. As you can see below, this is the main stage of the event (my apologies for such a bad pic cuz my sis took it :/).

There was a section that displays the console & Sony's breakthrough technology - Bluray. Just look at the beauty of the sexy black PS3. Oh my!

Gaming enthusiasts had the opportunity to experience the power of the PS3 at the gaming section where the 24-hour games marathon was held the night prior to the event. Seen here are ppl playing Soul Calibre IV (Not the best PS3 game. Why no MGS4? How about DMC4??)

Not to forget the chicks galore. As per usual. *shrugs* Well, they were actually cosplaying as some random female game character to compete for the Best Game Girl title. A little too thin but still hot, nevertheless.

How can I not take a snapshot with at least one of them, right? XD

Cousin bro was complaining that I didn't inform him about the cash voucher thingy. Heck. It's not like he had the time to go camp at the venue. After all, he had to fetch my aunt from the airport that night. Tough luck~ I'd have to admit that it was a good deal but...was all the long queueing hours & sleepless nights camping outside the cold worth it? This is very subjective. What do you think?

I've got an iPhone 3G!

I'VE GOT AN iPhone 3G!!

NOT! Lol. Did you guys actually believe that I got one?? Well, it actually belongs to my uncle in JB. Yeah I did mention about it in my previous post so here it is - some snapshots of the real thing as shown above. Didn't bother taking more snapshots of it cuz it's the same like the iPod Touch, just as I've said it many times. The only difference is the firmware which allows users to make calls & send text messages. If I'm not mistaken, the applications are similar to the iPod Touch.

Here's the peculiar thing. The 16GB version is supposed to have 3G embedded in it but I don't see any secondary camera. I thought 3G phones should have 2 cameras so that the one facing the user can be used to make video calls. There is none in this case. Indeed this gadget is cool but in terms of usability, I would rate it mediocre. Typing messages was such a hassle using the Qwerty keyboard. It's too cram & small thus causing typo errors to happen too often that it's supposed to be. I find it rather annoying too cuz the fingers tend to touch the wrong letter. What's more, typing becomes less precise using only the finger cuz the touchscreen doesn't detect stylus nor pointy objects.

Overall, it's a pretty cool gadget to play for fun but I believe the it's not worth spending over RM2000 in Malaysia. My aunt bought it for my uncle cuz she managed to get one of her Singaporean clients to sign a 2-year contract with SingTel who's entitled to buy the iPhone at dirt cheap price. It's not even close to RM1000. Can you imagine that? Lucky Singaporeans! Though the phone is exclusively available at SingTel outlets, it's not unlock. Ain't that great? Even those imported from US are network-locked to AT&T which requires a HyperSim or software unlock so that we poor Malaysians can insert our SIM cards in it. And that already costs a whopping RM2200 plus.

My uncle had no idea why his wife bought such a high-tech phone to use. She know nuts about handling this thing while my uncle is still in the process of learning on how to fully utilise it. In which I think it's very unlikely he'll succeed cuz he doesn't even know how to download apps to add on to the phone. Furthermore, he has no access to Internet at home whereas he's definitely too busy with his job instead surfing the net in the office. Oh well, it's not too bad a phone to flash around & show off. I bet iPhone won't be reaching our shores very soon. Not surprising. :/

Pink does not stink!

As much as I hate some ppl who're overly obsessed with pink stuff i.e. cellphones, bag, shoes, skirts etc., I can't help being one of the Barbies at times. Especially owning a pink J-phone specifically designed for girls. You hear me right ^^. I was captivated when I came across NTT DoCoMo's new model under the 706i series. It's the N706i Francfranc limited edition by NEC. Sooo pink, yet simple & stylish. The best part of it is the slimness, an essence in every female-inspired phone. Not to forget that the original box includes a travel set in conjunction with the travel theme, N meets Francfranc. Now if the price ain't too expensive & can be unlocked with HyperSim, I wouldn't mind asking my friend in Japan to purchase one unit for me XD. Gah, why can't we own gorgeous J-phones like this? T.T

Shopping alone, or should I say window shopping by myself is a rather torturous moment to endure. With insufficient cash in hand, all I could do was stare at the glass windows with starry eyes. Searching for the right pair of stilettos to match my prom dress proved to be a difficult task especially when the mall only houses branded merchandises. It's just so happened that I have to meet up a friend there. Boy, we chatted for almost an hr just about Dong Bang in Kinokuniya while standing & browsing through magazines at the Japanese section. XD

Anyways, walking aimlessly in one of the most exclusive shopping malls such as KLCC ain't that bad after all. It's a haven for all things new - fashion, electronics, you name it. Be the first to witness them while you're there. Especially when concept stores like Sony showcasing its ubersome huge LCD TV for your ultimate viewing pleasure. (shown as below)

The least I expect to see is a whopping 103" plasma TV by Panasonic, the world's largest plasma TV in the world recently exhibited at CES 2008. It's so enormous that it no longer looks like a TV. When viewed from a near distance, it's not even HD -_-". I think you need to stand really far to enjoy the crisp clear images. Makes me wonder who would fork out RM220,000 just for a gigantic idiot box to fit into his house.

On my way home, a man in his 30s or 40s carrying a backpack approached me to ask for directions. Being an oh-so-nice citizen, I explained to him on how to get to the railway station - KL Sentral. Then he began sharing his tale regarding how he his passport & wallet, leaving him penniless. He must be trying to garner sympathy & hopefully choke out some money from ppl like me who are too kind, I thought. He even followed me to the train though thankfully he wasn't trying anything bad. We chatted up a little & got to know him more.

Apparently, this man arrived from Singapore at Puduraya to take a bus to Jerantut en route to National Park for err...meditation, I think. He went to the Singapore High Commission to seek help but unfortunately that place is closed on weekends. The only solution is to get his bro to bring the documentation. Which is why he's meeting the bro at the railway station. I trusted him & gathered all the courage to accompany him to KL Sentral. After all, there's no need for me to leave the station with him. I understand how dangerous this is even if I'm only guiding him out & I was thinking...I just got myself into trouble.

Part of me calmed a little cuz I believe I could quickly run away if things go wrong. When we arrived at KL Sentral, I waited while he inserted his ticket to the machine. The barrier lifted up & let him pass. I could see his sullen face gleamed delightfully; I supposed he sure is glad that he went to the correct station. He thanked me many times, expressing how grateful he was that I helped him. We shook hands, exchanged names & he quickly asked if I could spare him a few coings to make a phone call to his bro. Errr...why on earth he doesn't carry a cellphone? Okay, okay ditch that. I actually thought of lending him my cellphone to make a quick call. But on second thoughts, I'd rather not. What if he flees away with my precious baby? NO WAY.

Coins worth RM2 was all I could give as I'm no philantropher. Should he turn out to be a conman, losing that RM2 wouldn't hurt, don't you think so? And so happened I brought very little cash...that makes me pretty broke that day after all spending on sushis from Isetan & a packetful of Korean noodles. I bidded him farewell, wishing him "good luck" & "take care". Curious about the man? He goes by the name Kern (dunno how to spell...) - lives in Bedok, East Singapore & works at Somerset near Orchard Road. I didn't manage to get his contact; preferably not as it's unnecessary anyway. Assuming that Mr. Kern told the truth, he'd probably remember me for the rest of his life cuz I saved his life XD.

As I was returning to the train platform, I couldn't help but smiled. My mood lifted up a lot. Didn't expect that doing small favour is capable of cheering someone. This is what I really need in the next few months since my emotions are really in a mess. Basically this post sums up all that happened yesterday. I've learnt something in this state of loneliness. Going to places give you the liberty but...is it comparable to going with a friend or companion? Judging from my current state, obviously I yearn for anyone to accompany me to ease that emptiness. I need someone to talk to. Usually I prefer to be alone; when I'm feeling perfectly normal.

As promised earlier, I'll give you an insight on my new camera. I bought it at RM1093 which I thought was a pretty good deal. There weren't many colours to choose from - black & silver. Somehow that shop managed to import a white one from Japan, a special colour rarely available in the local market. The white model was even more beautiful thanks to its glossy finish. Knowing how easy white colour attracts stains, Mum said to choose the conventional colour - metallic silver. The items listed below are the ones we received at the time of purchase.

The salesguy decided to change the Toshiba memory card to a Panasonic when we were interested but not convinced to make purchase at RM1100. Then, we requested that the mini tripod should be replaced with another item. Perhaps a screen protector but unfortunately the tripod costs so much lesser than the screen protector. I'd probably have to add on a few more dollars just for that plastic sheet. Nevertheless, we still insist that tripod should be taken out cuz we already have a bigger one at home neways. In the end, the salesguy agreed to deduct the price of the camera (sans the tripod). So that was how the RM1093 came about. I should've asked for free digital prints but I totally forgotten about it -_-. And then I thought, it's not like I always print out my photos neway so the free prints are useless.

Nevertheless, this one is so much better than my stolen Olympus. Btw, Panasonic uses Leica lens so no doubt it's good. Take note that all pics below were resized to save bandwidth. No other editings were done.

PC Fair (III) 2007

Today was the last day of PC Fair at the KL Convention Centre & I told myself that I had to go no matter what or else regret later for not missing the opportunity visit the Panasonic booth. For the first time, Panasonic decided to set up a booth to exhibit its products at PC Fair. Since I was dying to see the brand new Panasonic Lumix FX33, this was a chance not to be missed. Mum & sis came along as they both had something to grab anyway.

As usual, the crowd size was crazy as everyone squeezed through the hallway to get to the next booth. I was looking forward to enter the ballroom cuz Panasonic's booth is there & also this hall is where all the big shot companies such as Sony, Samsung, Lenovo etc were having exhibition. Without further delay, I approached the Panasonic booth & grab one copy of the VIERA TV catalogue while enjoying the captivating sights of the huge plasma TVs nearby. I found the Lumix cameras on display nearby & didn't hesitate to test the FX33. Omg, the camera is such a beauty *dreamy eyes*. The smooth & sexy curves, the thinnest of the camera width, the sleekness of the metallic finish on the camera body...the FX33 just oozes charm & glamour. At that moment, I half imagined that a stack of cash would fall down from the ceiling so I could purchase this sexy gadget right away. *sighs* It's not like I really have the money anyway. I walked off instead.

On the other hand, my sis visited the Sony booth just for the sake of snapping of the Vaio laptops decorated on the wall. It was indeed a creative idea as it succeeded in grabbing everyone's attention to stop by for a few mins at the booth. Way to go, Sony! Too bad I've already got a lappie for myself so I'm no longer interested to scout for a new one. Here are the pics that my sis managed to take. Lighting is bad cuz it's too blue. The hall was set up in soft lights hence making it difficult for my sis to get a good shot. What's more, she's only using my crappy Motorola Razr V3 camera in which I forgot to switch back the light settings from indoors to normal. Oh well, the switch wouldn't help much anyways. Okay, the pics weren't that bad either. Still, it's too blue~ -_- Anyways, to keep it short - I ended up buying things that I didn't plan to get in the first place. For instance, the Logitech mouse which costs me RM30 just cuz it's a...Logitech. My old Logitech optical mouse is starting to show some malfunctions but nevertheless, it still works fine. That's why I had no intention to get a new mouse anytime soon. For once, I feel so rational when it comes to purchasing non-Dong Bang stuffs XD. But Mum pestered me to buy one for standby. There goes my RM30 T.T

And another RM12 for blank DVD-Rs which costs RM24 (the other half paid by my sis). The DVD-Rs were a planned purchase so I shouldn't be categorising it as a waste of money. We needed those discs to store our ever-growing collections of mangas, dramas yadi yada which are clogging up my HDD. After meeting up my friend working at the DiGi booth - got tricked to sign up for 2 postpaid numbers - we left for lunch, savouring the freshness of sushis bought from Isetan supermarket. Of course, we didn't leave the exhibition without bringing home something great. I mean it. It was totally unexpected & so do you guys. Can you believe that we bought this in the end?? *look below*

The sleepless nights and endless presentation nightmares had finally came to an end. What a relief! But it's not over yet cuz exams are coming up in 2 weeks. I suppose the exam this time is tougher as we're given a long case study (yes, 20 pages...) to prepare before we bring it to the exam hall. The exam format goes like this...we're allowed to scribble anything on the case study & use it as a guideline to answer the questions. No other scribbled paper are allowed so we have to utilise whatever space we have on the case study paper for the necessary notes. I doubt you can fit the notes for the whole syllabus anyway.

I just bought a brand new LCD monitor several days ago. It's about time anyway cuz my old CRT is giving me problems (my sis uses the desktop more nowadays). At RM599, it's pretty darn good & the design is super sexy. I'm so proud to have one ^^.

XD Okay, okay...I'm not trying to be a show-off but erm, just telling you guys that this model is a good buy. It's not enough for gamers but moderate users like us would find it more than sufficient. Perhaps you guys might wanna try out this model when your old monitor dies.
